[Current Music |The Beautiful South - You Keep It All In]

Well hello there. Not done this for 63 weeks (count 'em), but I think 'tis time for an update.

Sooooooo, what's changed since the last time I ventured to these here shores?

Not very much, actually. Still working in t'shop, after six years (not counting the year at Asda), and two years after I graduated. Still searching for a uni-related job but not having much luck, applied for quite a few and heard nought back. But, hey, my time will come. I just wish it would hurry up.

Kept up the part-time uni studies as well, done three years in Spanish now, finished them with marks of 77, 81 and 72 in that order, including my best ever oral mark of 80 in level 2 (the year after final year... God, that seems so long ago now!) Also did level 5 German last year, which is broadly equivalent to degree level, and came out of that with 68%. Why could I not do that as a full-time student?!

Got a leaflet in with my results detailing course times etc. for next year. I'd like to go on and do level 4 and possibly level 5 in Spanish as well, but Angela (Spanish lecturer) mentioned in the last lecture of last year that level 4 may not run next year, although it is mentioned in the leaflet. Need to get in contact with her again and find out what's happening. It might be that the only thing to do would be to skip a level and go straight to level 5, which would be doable, but I presume would be rather more difficult than doing the two levels. Heh, I could be turning into a professional student, next year will be my sixth at uni!

I've become really interested in photography this year as well, ever since I got a digital camera last Christmas. Been everywhere from Newcastle to York, Whitby, Alnwick, Durham and Hexham among others taking photos (shameless plug alert: photos are online at www.flickr.com/photos/pwtf). Gonna see if I can take a part-time course in photography come September too.

Gonna be an usher very soon as well, my sister is getting spliced on August 1st (erk, next Friday!) and I've been recruited to usher along with the groom's cousin. Never been to a family wedding before so that could be an experience! Come 4pm next Friday (odd time for a wedding, I thought they were usually on Saturdays) that'll have changed though.

I think I'm all up to date now, I'll probably think of something later, in which case I'll stick it in here. Slightly sooner than 63 weeks' time though, honest!

Job applications [May. 2nd, 2007|05:00 pm]

[Current Mood | good]

So I toddled down to a recruitment agency who are looking for modern languages graduates today. All seemed to go well, handed my cv in etc. etc., but now I have to email an electronic copy of said CV over to them, along with an e-mail stating why I want the job. (as a payroll-type-person with IBM, apparently). Been trying to write a suitable email for a while now but so far I've drawn a complete blank. Anyone have any suggestions on what to write/how to go about it?!

Any suggestions will be gratefully received!!
TIA

Not a very intelligent bunch are they these spammers?! In the past couple of weeks I've had "online banking suspension notifications" from Barclays, Natwest, Royal Bank of Scotland and Halifax, none of whom I even have an account with!

And that's before I've even mentioned the promises of $94.5million from assorted South Africans which currently litter my inbox!

I was gonna post this on Facebook, but it won't let me, so I'm gonna vent here. There's a group on there, maintained by two Harvard students who probably know fuck-all about "sawkker", called "relegation of Newcastle United from the Premier League" with an introduction that reads like this (copied and pasted)

This group is for those of us who are tired of seeing ridiculous fumbles at the back end, spectacular own goals, disappointing lack of passion, ugly uniforms and still uglier fans.

We support keeping the Premier League one of professional competition and excellence. Relegate the Toon to league Championship!

If it was properly written I might think of giving it a reply.

So we made it into 2007 then... [Jan. 1st, 2007|08:46 pm]
[Current Location |My bedroom]
[Current Mood | relaxed]

Well, another year begins. Went out last night for New Years' Eve, 'twas good, imbibed much alcohol, and just generally had a good night. Midnight saw me in The Hancock complete with bottle of champagne and the usual jammed phone, eventually got all of my new years' texts out by about lunchtime today!! (apologies to anyone who might have received 2, only sent them once but got charged twice.... unless phone companies are like taxi firms and double their prices on New Years Eve...

Spent the first day of 2007 recovering from the last one of 2006, got home about 12, after walking into town in a vain attempt to shake off my thumping headache, trying to find a taxi and eventually getting one at the Central Station. Forgot to ring my mother when I got back to Chris's last night and ran out of battery so she couldn't ring me this morning, so she was a bit angry, but, meh. I'm grateful for the concern but it does get a bit tiresome her ringing me all the time. Anyway. Went to my sister's for lunch and to see the kids and that, 'twas nice, even if I did get jumped all over by Dylan (maniacal nearly-five-year-old nephew). Just passing the evening now in a nicely relaxed and un-hungovered state of mind, watching the last ever Vicar of Dibley later, then I'd probably better have an early night seeing as how I'm back at work at the unearthly hour of 8am tomorrow. (although saying that, an early night for me is 1am...)

Anyway, I'm gonna sign off here. Will be doing the usual year-end posts at some time in the coming days.

Hope everyone had a good night last night, and hope everyone has a good year ahead.

OK, so I couldn't resist the urge to go all Christmassy. Even if it doesn't feel like Christmas yet. (haven't done any shopping yet, but that's probably why.....)

Just had Spanish exam, went quite well, not back in uni until February 2nd now. Which is nice.

Anyways, I'm off to find coffee and food to placate my extremely sore throat before heading off to work.

Bye folks!

Yes, I have returned from The Great Abyss. Just to let y'all know I'm still here, and have been meaning to update this thing for rather a while now. But, as I've had four teeth wrenched out one after the other today I'm not exactly in a great state so that may not be happening for a little while longer! But anyway, yeah, I'm still alive and still kicking around.

Three months in fact.

New Five, New Month

1) This is the 1st of September, what do you want to accomplish by the 31st?
Erm, by the end of the month (September 30) I want to be at least on the way to getting a proper job.

2) What does September make you think about or feel?
HOLIDAY TIME! (We always go on holiday in September, once the little kiddywinkies have gone back to school!)

3) September is the ninth month; can you name nine memories so far from this year?
oh heck...

1) The, erm, interesting graduation ball
2) Results day
3) Graduation day
4) My niece's first birthday
5) Both exam seasons
6) My 21st birthday
7) The Stunt on Valentine's Day
8) The day in January I was two hours late for work
9) Thursday nights in Starbucks!

4) What does September have in common with three other months and can you name them?
welll, it ends in -ber, as do October, November and December. Or, it has only 30 days, as do April, June and November

5) The first weekend in September signals the end of summer for many even though it doesn’t really end for weeks. When does summer end for you?
Until now it's ended when I've gone back to school/college/uni. Dunno if that'll be the case this year though, seeing as I'm only going back to uni part-time

(and yes, I know it's Saturday!)

Well, well, well, things didn't go exactly as planned on the results front. I ended up with just a bare pass degree, which I can't resit because I got less than 40% in 50 credits, and the limit before you lose all resit opportunities is 40 credits. The worst part of it is that the marks that were below 40% were:

German advanced language skills: 38%
Dissertation : 36%
French nation studies : 16% (eh?!)

basically meaning that if I'd just got the extra 2% in German or 4% for my dissertation I would have had a better degree to start with, and the opportunity to resit to improve it further. If I'd got both I'd have had a 2.2 with no resits. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRDURGH. Anyways, the rest of the marks were:

Spanish : 77%
Contemporary Europe : 59%
French interpreting & translation : 55%
German interpreting & translation : 47%

Which aren't exactly too bad. Oh well. I'm off to book an appointment with the careers service to see what they say.

Friday Five Double Bill! [Jun. 3rd, 2006|07:08 pm]
[Current Location |The Front Room, St Peter's Basin, Newcastle upon Tyne]
[Current Mood | chipper]

1) Favourite movie of the 1980s?
erm, dunno, wasn't really into movies for the first four years of my life!

2) Favourite musician/group of the 1980s?
hmhmhmhm, don't really like 80s music.

3) Favourite TV show of the 1980s?
erm, did the Fresh Prince of Bel Air start in the 80s?

4) Favourite invention of the 1980s?
The CD (was that an 80s invention?)

5) World Event from the 1980s that stands out in your mind?
My birth! Or, seriously, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and, to a lesser degree, Chernobyl.

I was born smack bang in the middle of the 80s, which makes these questions quite difficult!

Honey, I’m Home!

1. How many places have you lived in your life?
8
2. Which was your favorite and why and what street was it on?
The current one, so nice and peaceful, down by the riverside on Trinity Courtyard.

3. If you could live anywhere for the rest of your life, where would it be?
Dunno, never really given it any thought.

4. What would your ideal home have in it?
erm, all mod cons, good housemates, and a few personal touches.

5. Can you describe your current crib?
Three storey townhouse backing onto a marina and the River Tyne. (well, for the next 26 days it is anyway!)
